COM (Customer’s Own Material)
If you already have a fabric you love, or you have found a textile elsewhere, you are welcome to bring it to the studio!
To keep your project successful, I do need to review COM fabrics in advance. I will ask to see a physical sample or detailed swatch information that includes details such as durability (often called rub count), weave, fiber content, pattern repeat, & the intended application.
To account for a proper inspection of COM fabric’s a small fee is applied per yard.
With this information, I can confirm whether your fabric is suitable for the specific piece we are designing together, or if we should consider alternative options to avoid premature wear or other issues.
Matching Fabric to Real Life
Not every fabric is right for every use.
Part of my role is to translate how you live into smart material choices, so your home looks beautiful & holds up over time.
- Kid & pet-friendly homes that need easy-to-care-for textiles
- Light-sensitive rooms where sun exposure can fade certain fabrics
- Outdoor or indoor-outdoor spaces that require weather conscious choices
- Formal rooms where luxury textures may be the priority
- Soft furnishings like drapery, pillows, & bedding that call for specific drape & feel

Together, we will look at:
- how often a piece will be used
- who will be using it
- what kind of maintenance are you comfortable with
From there, I recommend fabrics that align with your daily life, budget, & style, so you are not left guessing whether a material is truly right for you.
Fabric selection doesn’t need to be stressful
By working with Threadful Things, you can avoid costly mistakes like choosing a fabric that pills too quickly, fades in a sunny room, or feels wrong the moment it arrives. Instead, you gain a clear understanding of your options and a partner to guide you through each decision.
I explain the pros & cons of different textiles in everyday language, & help you narrow options based on your lifestyle, durability needs, & aesthetic. My goal is to educate & guide you.
How the Fabric Selection Process Works
I keep the process simple and supportive, so you always know what comes next.
- Consultation. We start with a conversation about your space, how you use it, your color preferences, & any existing pieces we are working with.
- A home review. Together, we look through vendor fabric books and samples in the studio, narrowing down options that fit your style and performance needs.
- COM evaluation. If you have your own fabric, I review the material or swatch details in advance to confirm that it is appropriate for the project.
- Recommendations. I present a focused selection of fabrics, explain why each option works, and answer your questions in clear, straightforward language.
- Ordering and management. Once decisions are made, I handle ordering the fabrics through the studio and coordinate details with any workrooms or upholsterers involved.
From start to finish, my goal is to streamline the choices, reduce overwhelm, and ensure that every fabric chosen supports both the design and daily life of your home.
